Many local schools have met the state requirement for the class of 2008 which was that 9 out of 10 students graduate. However according to the Ohio Department of Education Middletown missed the mark and will be launching a new alternative program designed to help freshman stay in school.
In an interview with Meagan Engle of the Middletown Journal Middletown High School principal Dennis Newell said that the “graduation rate is extremely important. Your ultimate goal is to graduate all of the kids that are in this high school.“ The Middletown graduation rate had gone down some to 79.3 percent for 2008. This put Middletown in the bottom 20 out of Ohio’s public schools.
Middletown High School has a higher graduation rate for 2008 than a few other urban schools in the state. Some of those not doing as well as Middletown include Cleveland that has the lowest graduation rate in the state at 53.7 percent and Springfield which has a slightly bigger district and a graduation rate of 77 percent.
Middletown schools also offer an alternative program called Success Academy. It allows students to work through computer-based classes and has doubled in size over the past three years.
