One of the biggest issues in today's economy is unemployment. Massive layoffs, cut backs, and downsizing have brought some hard times on the citizens of Ohio. However, the night is darkest just before dawn and many of the citizens of Middletown, as well as many of the citizens of a majority of Ohio counties, are getting a positive attitude due to recent drops in Ohio unemployment rates.
Unemployment in Ohio is, like in most states, a big problem. As of May 2009, the 88 total counties in Ohio have had a wide range of unemployment rates as low as 6.7% and as high as 17.1%. But among the 88 counties in Ohio, over half of them experienced a decrease in unemployment rates with 45 counties going down from the previous quarter. While Butler County did experience a slight increase from 9.4% to 9.7% in unemployment, Butler County does rank low on the list in terms of unemployment coming in at the 66th spot, with the first spot having the highest unemployment rate and the 88 spot having the lowest.
Middletown itself, which has received some recent negative press, has seen a drop in the unemployment rate from 12.1% to 12%. This is a positive note compared to other cities, like Fairfield and Hamilton, who experienced increases of 0.4% and 0.2% respectively. It may not seem like much on paper but in reality it makes a huge difference. The 0.1% drop in the unemployment rate means there are 100 more Middletonians with jobs.
