The Ohio Department of Education allows school districts to have five “calamity” days which can be used to close school for emergency reasons.
“This year, because of the wind storms in September and the recent extreme cold and snow, we have exceeded our five allotted days,” said Superintendent of Middletown City Schools, Steve Price.
“Our students cannot afford to lose any more instructional time,” Price added.
Ten of the eleven Middletown schools have to make up three days of school. Miller Ridge Elementary needs to make up four days since they were closed one additional day during the wind storm because of an electrical power outage.
Presidents Day, February 16th will be the first make-up day. Friday, March 13th , which was a day off for grades Pre school through grade eight, will be another day students and staff will be required to attend school.
Except for Miller Ridge Elementary School, Thursday, June 4th will be the last day of school for students in grades Pre school through eight.
Friday, June 5th will be the last day for Miller Ridge Elementary School and Middletown High School.
All students and staff are expected to be in school during regular school hours during the make up days. Transportation will operate as usual on all of the student attendance make up days.
If we have any more emergency school closings, we will have to add even more make-up days,” Price said.
