The public is invited to attend an informational meeting on Wednesday, January 28, 5:30-7 pm at Miami University Middletown’s Community Center in Johnston Hall on the campus at 4200 E University Blvd.
Middletown Pride in Action is a community-wide initiative with the mission “to encourage, initiate, promote, facilitate and celebrate positive action in Middletown.”
The organizing committee, led by long-time residents and community volunteers Sam Ashworth and Ann Mort , includes Maria Langendorf and Marie Edwards who grew up in Middletown and continue their careers and community involvement here, Chris Papakirk who grew up in Middletown and now lives in Springboro but maintains an active interest in his hometown, and Jeff Michel who is a relatively recent addition to Middletown who quickly became involved in community projects. A point stressed by Ashworth and Mort is that, “besides us, the other four are all under the age of 50 which brings that next generation to the front for Middletown’s future.”
Each of the committee members will be responsible for one or more divisions, charged with working with individuals and groups doing projects that fit into their divisions. Divisions range from education, cleanup/fixup, business, finance, sports, arts and festivals to publicity and others.
At the public meeting on January 28, those in attendance will hear a full explanation for the project, then break into groups to discuss individual projects, come back together to report and then leave to complete projects already underway, begin new projects and make Middletown an even better place to live and work.
Prior to the meeting anyone planning or continuing a project in 2009 is asked to email information about their project to RMort@cinci.rr.com. A list is being compiled of all projects, large and small that benefit the community. Send name of project, contact person, phone, email and description of project. Those who have no project in mind but are interested in helping should email their interest and will be added to an email distribution list to receive information about opportunities and updates on progress. “We know Middletown is a great community which has many positive things happening every year. This year, 2009, we want to do even more to boost our local economy, clean up our city, promote partnerships and to encourage every individual, club, team, business, church or group to adopt a project or make an existing one 50% better. We expect Middletonians to show their pride in the community through their actions taken during 2009,” said Mort.
