The Middletown City School district is now accepting nominations for Middletown City Schools Gifted and Talented Enrichment Program (GATE). GATE is designed for students in grades 4 through 6. Students attend classes one day a week, all day, at the Manchester School. The five GATE programs include: Art, Communications, Creativity, Music and Math/Science.
Guidelines for the selection of gifted and talented students are in accordance with state law, based upon standards established by the Ohio State Department of Education. Students are identified for placement into the gifted program through the following process: nomination by parents, teachers, administrators, peers, community, and/or self; screening through district-wide aptitude and achievement tests or auditions; and selection and placement.
“Gifted learners are students, children or youth who give evidence of high achievement capability in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity, or in specific academic fields, who need services and activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to fully develop those capabilities.” (No Child Left Behind, 2002.)
The mission of Gifted and Talented Education Programs is to provide challenging and engaging learning experiences and opportunities for growth that enable children with high potential, talent, and exceptional capacity to develop to their potential.
If you wish to nominate your son or daughter to be screened for possible entry into the GATE program please ask your school principal for a GATE nomination form. Forms must be completed and returned by February 24, 2009.
