In the case of Middletown's City Manager, that is a task, at the least, as the daily operations must continue in a community that has been managed in recent years by the influence of a few "political animals" who work each situation, usually with money, into their favor. (Why is that such a run on sentence? Because the knowledge gathering is a run away train itself.) Truly, these favored citizens are in the front row of the audience, but the audience is much bigger. In this town a new City manager has to learn who the sincere volunteers, and stakeholders are, who the totally disillusioned are, and why each is in that role. Meld it all with a confusing and perhaps skewed budget situation, and daily operations issues, and you have a 24 7 job. This does not even mention the personalities and workings of individual city employees, who would have to ax murder in the front lawn to be terminated. The fact that our City Manager takes the time to take care of herself and develop, at least one, critical interpersonal relationship is fabulous. Then the second task the City Manager must do is keep personal life, political life, seperate and keep up with professionalism daily. It makes one wonder why anyone would want to do this job? Keep up your spirit Judy....Someone, me, and perhaps many others, know what you are up against. We also know of those who will be natural sincere help mates, and hope you know by now yourself whom they are. Adriane |
