10/28/2009 1:33:51 PM | Mike_Presta | The city, as in so many other cases, has refused to fulfill their responsibilities to maintain this most historic site in Midlletown, and in doing so it has disrespected not only Middletown's founding fathers but also the deceased veterans from many wars who have bled to establish our great country and keep it free.
The City Council has remained silent, except to call for the demolition of the historic vault. The Historic Society, usually a loud voice to stop progress or grab tax money, has also remained deafeningly silent. Of course both of these groups are rumored to be fraught with Moving Middletown Forward supporters, and there seems to be no money, power, or other benefit to be gained here.
Although I know nothing about a "rally", I DO plan to visit the Middletown Pioneer Cemetery on First Ave. at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon to veiw the historic vault and grave sites, and to pay my respects to the deceased. I plan to be OUTSIDE the gate in the PUBLIC AREA near the flagpole by 2:55 pm (to avoid being locked inside.) I may linger in this PUBLIC AREA and ponder the contributions that the deceased buried inside may have made that affected my life, and I may even pledge allegiances to my flag and my country!
I no longer have a watch, so I hope that there are others there to ask about the time.
Thanks to MiddletownUSA for publicizing the plight of this PUBLIC, HISTORIC cemetery!!!

Think Mr.A will show? | 10/28/2009 6:18:42 PM | Mike Presta | Jack Fate states: "watch out for those tasers--especially if you see the city manager or Mr.Marconi holding one of them!"
I reply: Well, the City Manager has stated that the city just no longer has the time, money or manpower to mess with this PUBLIC, MUNICIPAL, HISTORIC cemetery (except to cut the grass). Therefore I can't understand any legitimate reason that ANY city personnel could possibly show up, except perhaps some low level person to lock the gate.
As far as Mr. Marconi, even though he has repeatedly stated that he represents the entire city, he has shown absolutely NO interest in this PUBLIC, MUNICIPAL, HISTORIC cemetery in the First Ward...absolutely NONE!!! I can't understand why he would show up now, less than a week before the election, except as some sort of campaign STUNT!!!
Next, Jack Fate asks: "Think Mr.A will show?"
I reply: As with Mr. Marconi, and even though it is in HIS First Ward, Mr. Armbruster has shown absolutely NO interest in this PUBLIC, MUNICIPAL, HISTORIC cemetery...absolutely NONE!!! I can't understand why he would show up now, less than a week before the election, except as some sort of campaign STUNT!!!
Both Mr. Marconi and Mr. Armbruster--as well as the rest of city council--have had every opportunity to address this issue, but they have all CHOSEN to ignore it (except for Mayor Lawrence P. Mulligan, Jr., who has expressed support for the City Manager's plan to DEMOLISH the vault.) They didn't even show any sympathy for the elderly ladies and gentlemen, who had relatives buried there, that spoke during the last council meeting.
If ANY of the council persons show up now, it will be nothing more than a cheap stunt, an attempt to grab some publicity, or a hope for a "photo op"!! Sorry if I sound harsh, but if they are sincerely concerned, why have they been silent for so long? | 10/29/2009 1:29:16 PM | Keith | Hope if Mr.Marconi does have a stun gun it comes with directions.:) | 10/30/2009 11:56:26 AM | mdizzie | If you wanted to get people to notice the "protest" or whatver, you needed to do it on a Friday night, when people are actually out. Saturday night would have been better. And people in Middletown only go out on Saturdays and Fridays, many passing the cemetery while coming into Middletown for whatever they are doing that night. I'm not a protester, or anything like that, but doing it on a Thursday Afternoon was kind of out of the way, and not really "in your face" like this issue should be dealt with. To make an impact, you need to take more time out to spend at the site, to let passers by know that we are serious about this cemetery. We need to let people know we want the best for our historical cemetery. Why don't we try to get it pushed through the state of Ohio as an historical site, so we can get some money from the state to help clean up. As far as I know, its been private citizens that have been taking care of grave markers. The dead can't talk, so we have to for them. Sounds kinda strange, but I thought we wanted to save a our historical cemetery here? Vail is rolling in his grave now. so sad. Does anyone know anything about pushing paper work through the state to maybe make the pioneer cemetery a place on the historical register?.

Ohio Legislation Affecting Ohio Cemeteries
O.R.C. 5901.37 Care of portion of cemetery set apart for veterans. In any county having a cemetery or part of it set apart for the burial of veterans, or containing a monument erected to their memory, or containing monuments and memorials erected by private or public expense to the memory of veterans, the board of county commissioners shall care for and properly preserve that portion of the cemetery so set apart for the burial of such veterans, and shall care for and properly preserve the monuments or memorials, and the board shall pay all expenses incident to such care and preservation from the general fund of the county. OHIO REVISED CODE< bitches. To me, all of the men and woman buried there are "vets" at life, they lived and died. And they are vets of our town, Middletown. Lets push this through people. Someone get my black ball point pen, we have some papers to fill out.
So, if there is a vet in that cemetery then the board of county commissioners shall care for the property! booya.

Website_ http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohcps/ | 10/30/2009 12:03:44 PM | Randy | mdizzie, I do agree that the rally was not at the best time of day but there was a reason it was set for that time. the cemetery closes at 3pm Monday through Friday and is not open on Saturday or sunday. So the concerned citizens were limited to when they could be there. I have just posted that the speech Vivan Moon gave at the rally have a look.
