Middletown Citizens Enthusiastic For Directly-Elected Mayor |

For the first time this year, Middletown citizens will have the opportunity to directly elect our new mayor. In 2005 voters approved a change in the city's charter, ending the practice of City Council appointing a mayor from among its four ward and three at-large representatives that will come into effect with November's coming elections.
David Schiavone will be Middletown's last council-appointed mayor, and he has announced that he will not be seeking to retain his office. Mayor Schiavone will however retain his 4th ward council seat through the end of his four-year term, which expires in 2009.
Two people have put their names forth so far for the election, Fred Sennet, a former councilman, mayor, and school board member, and Nick Kidd, who can be seen commenting on various issues in this video from MiddletownUSA.com.
According to Middletown's law director Les Landen, the directly elected mayor will continue the role of being the city's ceremonial leader and preside over council meetings, but will not have any more powerful than any other council member, or have any authority over daily operations or veto power.
