A year of planning and organizing comes together as Middfest International opens exhibits featuring Scotland on Thursday evening, October 2.
The public is invited to stroll the exhibits and enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere of the pre-Middfest evening.
Beginning at 6 pm, exhibits in and around Donham Plaza will open featuring:
The Dinner Party – Food For Thought. In the former Swallens building, chairman Dr. Mel Cohen will display a lively dinner party where the historic Scotch intellectuals test their theories.
The Scots Imprint on Science & Industry . Chairperson Jerry Kern will set a display on the patio of the Middletown Art Center to show the medical and natural science as well as industry and engineering contributions made by Scots.
Golf from the Beginning. Professional golfer Mike McGee will offer an overview of golf’s Scottish roots and local pros will help guests improve their golf swing.
The Scots of Letters – A City Building third floor exhibit will feature Scotland’s authors and poets from the past and present. 20th century writers Joanne Kathleen Rowling and Ronal Munro will be in Middfest’s own Carnegie Library.
Scotland’s Domestic Animals, Great and Small. Chaired by local veterinarian Dr. Stephanie Burk, a tent full of Scotland’s many breeds of dogs, cats, horses, cattle and sheep will be on hand between the United Way Building and the Women’s Center.
Motoring in the British Isles. A tent by the Manchester Inn will house a spectacular gathering of classic British cars, thanks to chairman Larry McCartt.
The Middletown City Building art exhibits will open at 7:15 with Clans and Tartans: Inextricably Scottish. Chairperson Libby Capps is arranging castles, clans, tartans, harps, bagpipes, household items and fine art on the four levels around the atrium.
At 7:30 p.m., guests will be invited to the City Council Chambers to hear guest lecturer Dr. Arthur Herman, author of the New York Times best seller “How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe’s Poorest Nation Created Our world and Everything In It.” Following Dr. Herman’s talk, there will be a reception and book signing in the City Building Lobby from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
At 9 p.m., a Malt Whisky Tasting and Demonstration will be held in the City Building featuring Single Malt Scotch and other Highland beverages. A $15 fee will be charged for the whisky tasting event.
Admission to the exhibit opening is free. Those who wish to become sponsors at $50 each will be given preferred seating at the lecture, a listing in the program and free admission to the Middfest weekend.
