12/2/2010  Immediate Release

Elementary students celebrate Rosa Parks with essays, prizes and role models

Details:  1:30 PM, Friday, December 10, Rosa Parks Elementary School, 1210 South Verity Pkwy, Middletown

Middletown, Ohio   For the fifth consecutive year Darren Brown has returned to his hometown, Middletown, OH, to host the Rosa Parks Elementary School’s – Rosa Parks Day. He provides the essay contest prompts, judges the essays, and donates the prize money.  Darren, who is now the Special Assistant to the Associate Administrator Office of Civil Rights for the federal government in Washington DC, is the event’s benefactor.

“What is your inspiration for a quality education and what will be your legacy?” was the question to be answered by third fourth and fifth grade contest participants.  Three award winners from each of the grades levels eligible to participate in the essay contest will be announced at the event on Dec. 10. Students in third fourth and fifth grades are eligible to receive:

First prize is $100.00

Second prize is $75.00

Third Prize is $50.00.

Darren also emcees the event and honors  community members who Darren says have, “believed in the potential and worth of every child, worked to help all Americans receive a quality education, played significant roles in developing character and molding and shaping the minds of youths, and continued to serve in various aspects of the Middletown community.”

This year the honorees are:

Lucy Imogene

Carine Martin
Thomas Wiley
Edrena Jones
Charles E. Hall
Judy Dixon

Student essay winners, honorees, Darren Brown and Rosa Parks principal Kee Edwards will be available for interviews before or after the event.

Really good question, Bill. We think it's too early to eantiilme two-trust arrangements yet, but mostly because the tax law is once again set to switch back in two years. Assuming Congress gets it together enough to come up with a solution that is at least semi-permanent, and that it includes the portability provision (probably good assumptions, but let's not count on them yet) it may be time to review the decision. So wait a year or so.In the meantime, existing credit shelter trusts can't just be eantiilmed. If one spouse has died and a credit shelter trust has already been created (or was supposed to be created because of the terms of the deceased spouse's will or trust), then the surviving spouse should talk to a lawyer with considerable estate planning and trust administration experience.QTIP trusts are another question altogether, as your post indicates. Best to talk with your estate planning attorney about that issue. While one apparent goal of Congress was to make planning easier, they have failed so far. Sorry to answer that you need more legal advice, but that is probably the case for the next two years. After that, we'll have to wait to see.
