On April 22, 2009 Middletown residents can find a few more things to do in town. Today is Earth Day and there will be a Day of service planned at Sunset Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to celebrate.
Earth Day is intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment. Originated by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in, and since January 1970 also called Earth Day -- is celebrated in many countries (including the US) each year on April 22.
The event at Sun Set Park is being put together and hosted by Keep Middletown Beautiful, Duke Energy has also made a $2,000 donation to purchase trees for the 15-acre park. Organizers are asking for volunteers to join in the planting of trees, edging, mulching and other clean up activities. They are also asking those interested to bring rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, weed-eaters and blowers.
The Red Cross will participate by severing coffee and water for those volunteering a hot air balloon will tethered at the park, weather permitting. The city will observe Arbor Day on Friday the 25th at the park with a tree planting and proclamation. There will also be trees given away to be planted by the residents of Middletown.
The event will conclude Saturday the 26th at Sunset Park with a final day of clean up followed by a free cook out for those that gave there time volunteering.
