It’s official. The SunCoke plant has stopped all construction due to the Monroe lawsuit. This stoppage has cut about 500 jobs in Middletown. These workers would have had full time employment by this summer, some making $40 an hour with complete benefits. The SunCoke Company met with Butler County Building and Construction Trades Council yesterday.
The meeting was held to inform them of the work stoppage. Gary Corbin, the council's executive secretary treasurer, told the Middletown Journal that this news means about 25% of their construction employees will be without work. The city of Monroe filed a lawsuit in January citing violations in the federal Clean Air Act. The plant is near the Middletown-Monroe border. In an interview with the Middletown Journal Alan McCoy, AK Steel spokesman said "It is just beyond belief especially when we are in such a deep recession and are looking for stimulus relief." Pending litigation from the city of Monroe the Coke Plant will not be given full release to build |
