Middletown City Schools could soon be having a competitive dance team. This could happen as Middletown is trying to expand the sports opportunities for girls. In a recent study it showed a disparity in athletics when it came to offerings for males and females.
There are 49.02 percent of females and 50.98 percent of males that were participating in sports according to the district. Danielle Wilson of the Middletown Journal wrote that superintendent Steve Price announced Monday during a study update that they do plan on moving forward to eliminate the disparities.
In a survey done by Middletown schools competitive dance was the most popular among girls in the district. The estimated cost for adding a competitive dance team for the school would be $42,125. That would include uniforms, equipment, travel expenses for around 10 competitive events and the possibility of a coach as supplemental staff.
The coach does not have to be a paid employee but could rather be a volunteer or a person who coaches a different sport in the district. Steve Price had suggested that the board consider cutting back in the budget to make room for the team. In addition Price asked the board to work with the Greater Miami Conference to provide as many peak game times for female athletes as possible.
