City of Middletown, Ohio Public Notice
Monday, October 19, 2009 9:28:17 AM - Middletown Ohio

How would you spend $3.4 million dollars in your community?

The City of Middletown, Ohio is receiving comments regarding housing and community development needs within the City’s boundaries.  The City anticipates receiving an estimated $685,000 in FY 2010 CDBG funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.  Over a period of five years, those total grant funds are expected to be in excess of $3.4 million.  Citizens are asked to express their views on the allocation of these funds.

Input received will be considered by the City in developing the Five Year Consolidated Plan to be submitted to HUD.  The consolidated plan is the application for federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and consists of a strategy to address the housing, homeless, and community development needs of our City.  The plan also includes an Annual Action Plan that identifies the actions to be taking in the coming year to implement the identified strategies.

All interested citizens of the City are invited to provide input on community needs.  Citizens may:

1.    Attend a public meeting to be held on November 5, 2009 at 6:00pm at the City Building located at 1 Donham Plaza, Middletown, OH 42042.  If you have any special needs, please call Judy at (513)425-7939 at least two days prior to the meeting.

2.    Complete an online survey.   The survey can be completed by going to http://www.cityofmiddletown.org/community/comdev.html and clicking on the “Community Needs Survey” link on the right hand side.

3.    Provide written comments that are delivered to:  City of Middletown, Community Revitalization Dept, 1 Donham Plaza, Middletown, OH 45042

If you have questions, please call Kyle Fuchs at (513)425-7950.

Fundamentally, the City of Middletown should reject any and all federal monies. The acceptance of such leads the city into a position of indentured servitude. Money received from the federal government is not without strings attached. The city can be forced to adhere to irrational policies or to toe the line with a political entity lest such funds be yanked away at a moment's notice. The city needs to re-think government. It needs to look to local solutions to some of the lofty goals inferred by their online survey.

"But there would not be enough money," the city may reply. Imagine living within their means.
Imagine postponing irrelevant projects until such a time as local funds are available. Imagine
the city reducing or eliminating whole departments that have nothing to do with the purpose of government. Fundamental services such as police, fire, and public works are the basic functions of government. Things such as community organizing and leadership as addressed by one of the questions in the online survey have nothing to do with government's purpose and everything to do with potential of power grabs and corruption (Will we ignore the legacy of ACORN?).
The city needs to re-focus upon the fundamentals and, above all, look to local solutions and entities.
