------------AK STEEL PRESS RELEASE--------------------

AK Steel Donates Stainless Steel To Flight 93 Memorial Project

Middletown, OH, August 26, 2002 — AK Steel (NYSE: AKS) said today it is donating 20,000 pounds of stainless steel produced in western Pennsylvania to a project raising money for a permanent memorial to the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93. The flight crashed last year in Somerset County, Pennsylvania during the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The stainless steel, melted at AK Steel’s Butler Works, will be used by the Hearts of Steel project to make commemorative bracelets. The bracelets are inscribed with “We Remember 9-11-01 / United We Stand,” with “USA” on one side and the famous call to action “Let’s Roll” on the other. All proceeds from the sale of the bracelets will go to help construct a memorial to passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93.

“It is truly fitting and proper that the heroes of Flight 93 be honored with a permanent memorial,” said Richard M. Wardrop, Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer of AK Steel. “The men and women of AK Steel are honored to be a part of this project to bring lasting glory to those who faced down terrorists for all Americans by making the ultimate sacrifice.”

The remarkable courage of the passengers and crew of Flight 93 is credited with preventing the hijacked aircraft from reaching its intended target on September 11, saving countless other lives and sparing destruction of one of our nation’s cherished symbols of democracy.

The Hearts of Steel project was initiated by Pennsylvania Senator Jane Orie and has been joined by numerous groups, businesses and individuals. Additional information about the Hearts of Steel project, including bracelet order information, can be found at www.heartsofsteel.com.
