AK Steel and the United Steelworkers of America Initiate Discussions Friday October 3, 9:00 am ET
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 2003--AK Steel (NYSE:AKS - News) said today that company representatives have met with the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) to explore topics of mutual interest with regard to the AK Steel facilities where employees are represented by the union. The company said that the meetings have included face-to-face discussions between James L. Wainscott, acting chief executive officer of AK Steel, and Leo W. Gerard, USWA international president. "We have met to offer a new approach for AK Steel and the USWA to discuss and resolve issues that are meaningful to both parties," said Mr. Wainscott. "We are hopeful that together we can forge a new relationship that recognizes the realities of our business while we continue to serve our customers, shareholders, employees and others who rely on our success," he said.
Mr. Wainscott added, "I have appointed a high level team from AK Steel to address and resolve outstanding issues as quickly as possible."
AK Steel and the USWA have agreed to keep the content of their discussions private until such time as mutually agreed upon.
AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steel products for automotive, appliance, construction and manufacturing markets, as well as tubular steel products. The company has about 10,000 employees in plants and offices in Middletown, Coshocton, Mansfield, Walbridge and Zanesville, Ohio; Ashland, Kentucky; Rockport and Columbus, Indiana; and Butler, Pennsylvania. In addition, the company produces snow and ice control products and operates an industrial park on the Houston, Texas ship channel.
